Brief Project Description / Summary of Work
Front Entrance
- Modify the existing front door steps leading from the porch into the home to improve safe access by increasing tread depth to a minimum of 16 inches and reducing riser height from approximately 5.5 inches to 4 inches.
- Install 3 angled, graspable, continuous handrails (1.25-inch diameter), one on each side and one in the ceter of steps, on the front porch steps leading from the driveway to the front porch.
- Apply non-slip safety tread strips to all front porch steps (product link).
- Repair or modify the existing front door threshold to eliminate the existing gap and provide the smoothest feasible transition to steps.
- Install one (1) 24-inch vertical grab bar adjacent to the exterior front entry door, with the bottom of the grab bar mounted 33 inches above the porch surface. The grab bar is intended to provide the resident with a secure, graspable support when entering the home.
- Install one (1) 24-inch vertical grab bar immediately inside the front entry door, mounted 33 inches above the finished floor. The grab bar is intended to provide the resident with a secure, graspable support when exiting the home.
Rear Deck
- Construct new railing assemblies along both sides of the rear deck stairs. Affix a continuous, angled, 1.25-inch-diameter graspable handrail to the inside of each newly constructed railing, following the full length and slope of the stairs.
- Install one (1) 24-inch vertical grab bar at the exterior left side of the sliding glass door, mounted 33 inches above the deck surface. The grab bar is intended to provide the resident with a secure, graspable support when entering the home.
- Install a threshold ramp at the sliding glass door to reduce the transition between the interior floor and exterior deck.
- Apply non-slip safety tread strips to all rear deck steps (product link).
Basement Entrance
- Modify the existing basement door threshold to provide the smoothest transition feasible.
- Install a continuous graspable handrail (1.25-inch diameter) along the basement entry stairs, extending from the basement door and continuing beyond the top step onto the patio to provide continuous support while ascending and descending the stairs.
- Apply non-slip safety tread strips to the basement steps.
Bedroom
- Re-stretch the bedroom carpet to eliminate wrinkles and reduce trip hazards, to include temporarily moving, protecting, and replacing bedroom furniture as necessary to complete the work.
Kitchen
- Provide and assemble one (1) kitchen step stool with handrail (product link).
Bathroom
- Replace threshold to provide a flush transition between flooring surfaces.
- Install two (2) wall-mounted, flip-down grab bars, one on each side of the toilet, mounted 30 inches above the finished floor (product link). Confirm final placement with the participant prior to installation by having her sit on the closed toilet seat lid with her arms comfortably flexed to ensure functional positioning.
