Brief Project Description / Summary of Work

Outdoor Space/Backyard Steps

Construct Accessible L-Shaped Ramp System

Construct an exterior L-shaped wooden accessibility ramp system from the rear doorway to the yard.

  • Ramp shall be constructed with a maximum running slope of 1:12 (one inch of rise for every twelve inches of horizontal run).
  • Provide a minimum clear ramp width of 36 inches, measured between handrails where handrails are installed.
  • Overall ramp length is anticipated to be approximately twenty-four (24) feet minimum, but contractor shall determine the actual length required based on field measurements and the elevation change from the rear doorway to the final landing/grade in order to maintain the required maximum 1:12 slope.
  • Configure ramp in an L-shaped layout to bypass the existing concrete steps and terminate at a stable, firm ground surface.
  • Provide level landings at the top and bottom of each ramp run. At the change in direction, provide a level landing with a minimum clear dimension of 60 inches by 60 inches.
  • Provide continuous, graspable handrails (1.25″ diameter) on both sides of ramp runs.
  • Provide appropriate edge protection along open sides of the ramp and landings.
  • Ramp decking and landings shall provide a firm, stable, slip-resistant walking surface suitable for exterior use.
  • All framing, posts, footings, decking, railings, handrails, connections, and other components shall be securely anchored and structurally sound.
  • Use exterior-rated, weather-resistant materials and corrosion-resistant fasteners suitable for permanent outdoor installation.
  • Contractor shall field-verify all dimensions, elevations, required ramp length, landing configuration, and site conditions prior to construction and shall comply with applicable building-code and permitting requirements.

Non-Skid Contrast Treads:

  • Apply non-skid, high-contrast tread strips along entire ramp surface
