Few people have the opportunity to do
what they truly enjoy when they go to work every day. It is my
great pleasure to provide leadership to the disAbility Resource
Center. The staff is a team that is genuinely enthusiastic and
caring, making a positive difference for the people that they serve.
Back in the early 1990’s I had the
opportunity to learn the lessons of community inclusion from some of
the best, including John O’Brien, Jack Pierpoint, Marsha Forest and
John McKnight. I have tried to take those lessons learned to the
disAbility Resource Center, building a community that truly values
all individuals regardless of their disability. We believe that
every citizen brings value to their community and has a right to
live, work, recreate, and be a part of their community. Living
independently does not mean that you can do everything by
yourself. There is no bar to jump over, no test to take, to be part
of your community. Having the desire is enough to get started. No
one should have to live in isolation or in institutions.
So, we move forward this year
expecting the community to be inclusive of all people, breaking down
the barriers either physical or attitudinal and rejoicing in the
gifts of people with disabilities. We invite you to join us in
efforts to restore ADA, eliminate waiting lists for Medicaid Waiver
services, increase affordable, accessible housing, retain parental
rights of children receiving special education, increase meaningful
employment opportunities for people with disabilities, help people
transition from nursing homes to their own homes and so much more.
My motto learned all those years ago continues to be:
All means
All – Marsha Forest 1942-2000 |
